Too Lazy To Blog: News Updates

What with all the typing and conjuring good expressions for my cover letters, I was really quite repulsive of producing phrases. So I try to be short and sweet now lol

All these days I was at home, I read STOMP and OMY so much, I get soo… in touch with those ’society news’. What are the ravest news for the past week?

THE NEWS: Gong Li becoming a Singaporean Citizen, when NONE of the 4.8 million sg-eans out there have never seen her on the sg roads for the period of X yrs (I don’t know the exact number) she was supposed to stay in sg to get her citizenship. (My sis say marrying a sgean means no need to fulfill that requirement, true?)

THE REPERCUSSIONS: Not only were her own people (now this is getting tacky, technically speaking, I was referring to her EX-own people) accused her of being a traitor especially shortly after she served her country as some government official (now, isn’t she supposed to be in sg serving her terms to become a citizen during this time?). Her own people (down HERE) could only grumble and make some noise, but still had to accept her like we condoned the Great Chinese Migration that took place for the past 10 years. In nicer words, we do not want to make ourselves look like we’re jealous or sour grapes. Bluntly, we just could not be bothered, anymore.

MY TAKE: Anyways, there were also people who said that it was a political move by The People Up There, to draw attention to sg (wa lao eh... World-renown star in our backyard sia...), while others used it as a reverse psychology to tell those who condemned sg society that sg IS indeed better than other countries. I guess at the end of the day, all I could think of was: So what? It was not as though she isn’t going to bring in her millions of endorsement fees into local banks and help spur our economy directly. She just wants a sg citizenship, for her own good. Too much attention had been devoted on her le.

THE NEWS: (In relation to the above news) An ex-foreign student (I shall not specify where he comes from) called sg a SHIT society when he saw his own country(wo)men selling their bodies in Geylang.

THE REPERCUSSIONS: This news sort of rubbed salt into the already growing aggression of locals vs foreigners. Locals were not happy when these people came to deprive our people of education (and thereby higher qualifications) and jobs. We were not happy when a major part of them just  拍拍屁股走人 (treated sg as a jumping board). We are definitely not happy when these people whom we groomed with the taxes we paid, turned around after they left and bit the hand that fed them.

Lists of ingrates came to mind, especially those related to the sports arena, who either left (disappeared should be a better word) before they brought pride to the nation (just to prove that they had no intention to contribute to us in the 1st place), or after they brought pride to our country, thereby hurling the silent insult that we are only worth the (name the colour) medal for the petty amount of money we spent on them. If we had not imported them from their home country and gave them the chance to prove themselves, they would still be left at the sidelines, outshone by their peers who went on to become World No. 1 (2 and 3, as a matter of fact).

Of cos, when arrows start shooting, all those foreigners who plainly came here to seek a better life and never thought of biting the hand that fed them also kena. When banglas congregate, they were deemed as nuisance. When they block the way, they caused public hazards. When they went to Sentosa on Deepavali, well, I was angry, cos they blacked out (sorry for the pun) my view of bikini gals.

MY TAKE: In reply to the Shit Hoohaa, I wondered: When you enter an otherwise clean toilet with a pile of shit on the floor, do you blame the toilet for being dirty or the person who left that pile of shit there? (wow! more Shit Theories!)  Well, Geylang is The Place to look for paid sex, legally, anyways. Back in the certain country, I think such acts were more rampant, absurd and definitely illegal.

THE NEWS: Man got killed by the white tigers in the Zo.O.

THE REPERCUSSIONS: Did he jump in? Or was it an accident? Some people reprimanded that by stating that the man jumped in when there was no concrete evidence, the ST journalists were jumping into conclusions (more puns again).

MY TAKE: hmmm… There was a moat around the enclosure, and that moat was supposed to keep the tigers IN their enclosures, meaning the tigers were not able to swim, right? If the man really ‘fell’ into the moat, he would have stayed in the moat, thereby protecting himself from the tigers. The only way he could end up across the moat to be mauled by the cats, would either point to a purpose of getting there (ie he SWAM across the moat) or there was such a strong undercurrent that swept him to the other side.

Just in case no one realized, Mandai Zoo is beside a place called Mandai Hill. Where comes the undercurrent?

THE NEWS: Ragging, need I say more?

THE REPERCUSSIONS: This incident was actually a ‘repercussion’ of a video ‘exposed’ last week, of a new bird in SCDF being stripped naked and rubbed with shoe polish all over, as part of an initiation ceremony. The relevant authorities came out and settled the matter, while other people went to dig out similar activities in the non-uniformed world.

Some people blamed it on the degenerative education ‘young people’ had. Some people focused on keywords like ‘JC’ and ‘elite’ (like: ‘only JC kids would do such things’) and even went on to search for similar hazing activities done by JC students. I didn’t go to verify the matter, but all that came to my mind was: How come poly don’t have such videos? My only guess was that they did not know how to upload videos onto Youtube. haha… No lah. Their way of bonding was to smoke and drink; not a very interesting video to put onto the web anyways.

Ironically, JC kids defended themselves by saying those who complained were making a mountain out of a molehill. hmmm… Anybody saw how this can lead to more arguments between the 2 camps?

MY TAKE: Well, I finally left my 1st comment on STOMP after the surfacing of the 2nd done-by-JC-students-only videos:

‘had to admit dis was childish.

when i was in uni, we ‘ragged’ ‘frens’ by hurling candied insults, shooting arrows from shadows and stabbing them from their backs. now, THIS is mature.’

I was trying to be sarcastic, though I wonder if anybody got the sarcasm.

But what made me feel irritated was: Why in the world is everybody labelling ACJC (or ACS) an ‘elite’ school?!?!

It comes down to how the word ‘elite’ became a popular catchphrase in local society. You see, about 10 years after Fann Wong made her ever-popular-to-quote comment (我们只是同事,不是朋友), some gal (who happened to have blood of a white breed of horse) made a similarly controversial comment: Get out of my elite, uncaring face.

It created an uproar, of cos, and people then equated ‘elite’ to people who were: 1) top 0.X% of the cohort academically 2) of White Blood, based on the background of the gal.

Then, the word evolved to include the meaning of ‘come from a very good school’, so that people who had a grudge with the Top Three JCs and Top 10 Sec Schools could make accusations with a more powderful-sounding word. (like: Students from ‘elite’ schools vandalized public property).

Apparently, the average sg-eans have a very relaxed attitude with respect to the definition of standards, so the word ‘elite’ then came to represent ALL JCs (well, JC was deemed more ‘elite’ than poly) and perhaps the top 50% of sec schs in sg. This made me go Duh! cos well, it just goes to show how bad sgeans’ English is.

I am speculating, with the turn of recent events, that ‘elite’ will soon be used to refer to DBS, or the financial advisors who sold those Lehman minibonds. After that, it will be used to refer to DBS (poor thing, kena shoot again), Singtel and (names of big local companies, with or without white blood links) who retrenched/freezed employment/cut pays.

hmmmm… cos in my opinion, the mindset of the average sg-eans is:

If you don’t agree with me, or act according to my advantage, then you are an uncaring elite!
